Season 3 has leaned hard into the toxic dynamic between these two, building a portrait of sibling rivalry so corrosive it makes the broader Targaryen civil war look almost manageable by comparison. Now, with Condal publicly teasing a future confrontation, fans of the show and readers of George R.R. Martin’s source material have plenty of reason to start theorizing about what comes next.
Ryan Condal Teases an Aemond and Aegon Reunion in House of the Dragon
In a recent interview with The L.A. Times, Condal was asked directly about whether the two estranged brothers would cross paths again before the series concludes. His answer was telling.
“In the great tradition of Game of Thrones, I feel like that is a fairly safe bet,” Condal told the publication. “Characters are scattered all over the map and then slowly find themselves being brought back together, but in different forms. That was always something we were talking about doing with Aemond and Aegon.”
The phrase “different forms” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here and deliberately so. House of the Dragon has invested significantly in magical dream sequences, prophetic visions, and weirwood-fueled psychic experiences. A reunion between these brothers doesn’t necessarily require them to be standing in the same room.
Their feud stretches back to childhood. Aemond spent years resenting Aegon’s claim to the Iron Throne, while Aegon made little effort to treat his younger brother with respect. That long-simmering tension finally boiled over during the Battle at Rook’s Rest in season 2, when Aemond used the chaos of battle as cover to attack Aegon directly unleashing Vhagar’s dragonfire on his own king. Aegon barely survived, left horribly burned. Aemond’s warning to keep the truth buried added humiliation to injury. But Aegon has since recovered, regained his strength, and by all accounts is now consumed by a singular desire: Aegon Targaryen’s revenge against the brother who tried to kill him.

Fire & Blood Book Changes: Will Aemond and Aegon Meet Again?
For readers familiar with Martin’s Fire & Blood, Condal’s comments may land as a genuine surprise. The source text written as a fictional maester’s account of Targaryen history contains no suggestion that Aemond and Aegon encountered each other after the Fall of King’s Landing. Their stories diverge, and they never reconverge on the page.
That means a confirmed reunion between the two brothers would mark a meaningful departure from the Fire & Blood book lore one of the more significant show-original additions to date. House of the Dragon has always operated with creative latitude in adapting Martin’s history, filling in gaps that the in-universe “unreliable narrator” format of the book naturally leaves open. But engineering a direct confrontation between Aemond and Aegon goes beyond filling gaps; it rewrites the record entirely.
This isn’t necessarily a flaw. The television series has consistently argued convincingly, at times that the emotional truth of these characters matters more than strict fidelity to the source chronicle. An Aemond and Aegon fight or face-off, whether physical or psychic, would deliver a character payoff that the book simply never provides.

Condal’s hints open up several compelling avenues, each rooted in the show’s established mythology.
Could a Physical Encounter Bring Them Together Across Westeros?
The most straightforward possibility is a physical meeting. Aemond, mounted on Vhagar, remains one of the most mobile figures in the entire conflict capable of covering vast distances and appearing without warning. Aegon, now recovered and motivated by revenge, is also on the move. The geography of Westeros isn’t infinite, and the show’s narrative gravitational pull tends to draw enemies toward each other.
A chance convergence is plausible. It would also be the kind of unrecorded meeting that Fire & Blood’s format conveniently leaves room for events that the maesters simply never captured.
What Are the Aemond Targaryen Harrenhal Visions, and Could They Connect Him to Aegon?
This is where things get genuinely fascinating. Harrenhal has already proven to be a site of extraordinary psychological and supernatural power. In season 2, Daemon Targaryen was practically consumed by weirwood-induced visions during his time there visions vivid enough to blur the line between dream and reality. Most strikingly, Daemon appeared to make direct psychic contact with Helaena at the Red Keep, with the camera cutting back to confirm her simultaneous experience.
Aemond is now in that same cursed castle. Given what the show has established about Harrenhal’s capacity for supernatural communion, it would be structurally consistent almost expected for Aemond to face his own reckoning through those visions. At minimum, an apparition of Aegon seems likely. At most, a real-time psychic exchange between the brothers is entirely within the show’s established rules.
Could Dragonrider Bonds or Valyrian Glass Candles Bridge the Distance?
For a genuine two-way psychic link to occur, Aegon would need some form of magical awakening on his end. The show has laid potential groundwork for several possibilities:
- Sunfyre: Aegon’s dragon survived Rook’s Rest, though badly wounded. Their reunion could trigger something the dragonrider bond, as established in Targaryen lore, carries a magical resonance that the show has gestured toward without fully exploring.
- Weirwood trees: Aegon’s journey across Westeros could bring him into contact with one of the ancient trees, providing an unexpected gateway into the same psychic network that has already affected Daemon and potentially Aemond.
- Valyrian glass candles: These artifacts which allow for communication across enormous distances have been discussed among fans for seasons. House of the Dragon has been building toward a deeper engagement with Valyrian magic, and a glass candle appearance would be a significant and overdue payoff. Whether Aegon could realistically locate and operate one independently is another question, but the show’s willingness to accelerate character capability when drama demands it makes it a live possibility.
What This Means for the End of House of the Dragon
The implications of a confirmed Aemond and Aegon reunion extend well beyond a single dramatic scene. Aegon’s quest for revenge against his brother is now his defining motivation. Everything he does every alliance he seeks, every dragon he reclaims carries the shadow of that betrayal at Rook’s Rest.
If Condal follows through on this tease, the confrontation between these brothers could serve as one of the defining moments of the Dance of the Dragons on screen. The Targaryen civil war, for all its political complexity, has always been fundamentally a story about a family destroying itself. No single encounter could embody that theme more completely than Aemond and Aegon a kinslayer and his surviving victim finally facing each other again.
With roughly 11 episodes remaining before the series concludes, the window is narrowing. The question is no longer whether it will happen, but when and in what form Condal chooses to deliver it.
